Dubai Walk Master Plan: A Vision for a Walkable City by 2040
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has unveiled the ambitious “DUBAI WALK MASTER PLAN,” a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming Dubai into a fully walkable city by the year 2040. This visionary project envisions an extensive pedestrian network totaling 6,500 kilometers, comprising 3,300 kilometers of newly constructed routes and 2,300 kilometers of upgraded pathways. The initiative represents a significant stride towards promoting active lifestyles, enhancing connectivity, and supporting sustainable urban development in alignment with the broader goals of Dubai’s Urban Plan 2040.
Key highlights include the construction of 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses, strategically designed to enhance accessibility and safety for pedestrians across the city. The walkways will cater to diverse needs through three distinct models: Scenic-Leisure Walkways, City Connectivity Walkways, and Community Walkways. These pathways are not only designed to link various parts of the city but also to encourage recreational walking, community engagement, and seamless urban mobility. By increasing pedestrian and soft mobility from the current 13% to 25% by 2040, the plan aims to significantly reduce reliance on motorized transport while fostering a healthier, more active lifestyle.
